Two Kings, Two Hearts

Saul and David both sinned grievously. Saul became consumed with his own power, image, and prestige. David gave himself to the appetites of his flesh, committing adultery, murder, and deception. Yet Scripture calls David “a man after my heart.” What made the difference? David’s response to his sin. When confronted, David humbled himself. Psalm 51 gives us his prayer: “Against you, you only, have I sinned.” He pleaded for restoration and a willing spirit. Saul doubled down. David broke down. Sin is serious, but so is the mercy of God toward the contrite sinner. The question is not whether we sin, but what we do when we are confronted by our sin.
